Residents of Tottenham noticed several geese that appeared to be dead geese on the ice at the Tottenham Conservation Area, while the rest of the flock floated in the water.
The geese raised concerns that the flock might be diseased or that some had died suddenly for another reason.
It is not common to see a number of animals suddenly die together in this way.
Concerned residents notified officials of the strange site.
As a result, there is now an investigation underway to determine what caused the deaths.
The Town of New Tecumseth issued a statement reporting that the proper authorities had been notified of the issue.
“Thank you to those who reported a presence of deceased geese at the Tottenham Conservation Area. The Town of New Tecumseth is working with the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) and Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) on appropriate next steps,” reads the town’s statement. “A sample collected from the Tottenham Pond has been delivered to CWHC for analysis, with results pending. We will continue to work with the NVCA and CWHC and provide updates on our official channels. Further guidance and reporting options can be found at cwhc-rcsf.ca.”
The agencies can determine the cause of death and take appropriate action if needed, if there is a suspected disease outbreak, or if the geese were killed in another manner.
