Eight Junior C teams move to Conference championships in Ontario

The Provincial Junior Hockey League has crowned Division champions with the final games played on Sunday, April 17.

That leaves eight Junior C teams still standing across the province.

Teams will now start a best-of-seven Conference playoff series with the remaining four winning teams advancing to the provincial Schmalz Cup Junior C championship tournament in May.

The Stayner Siskins won the North Carruthers Division title after sweeping the Schomberg Cougars in four games in a series that wrapped up on April 13.

The Siskins finished in first place in the Division this year and held onto the top spot for most of the season finishing well ahead of the rest of the pack in the points column.

Stayner Siskins will now go on to meet the Mitchell Hawks in the Conference final.

Mitchel won the North Pollock Division after eliminating Hanover in a series that went seven games and finished on April 16.

In the East Orr Division, the Clarington Eagles came out on top over the Little Britain Merchants in a series that ended in a four-game sweep.

They will go on to face the Napanee Raiders. The Raiders won the East Tod Division over the Amherstview Jets. That series went seven games and wrapped up on April 17.

The New Hamburg Firebirds eliminated the Tavistock Braves to win the South Doherty Division in a series that went six games.

In Niagara, the Grimsby Peach Kings came out on top in their battle against the Glanbrook Rangers to win the South Bloomfield Division. That series went six games.

The North Middlesex Stars eliminated the Thamesford Trojans four games to claim the West Yeck Division title.

In the west end of the province, the Lakeshore Canadiens came out on top in their series with the Essex 73’s. That series went four games.

When the final four teams are decided, they will enter a tournament style provincial championship this year.

Due to the hockey shut-down in January, the League extended the regular season.

League executive made the decision to move to a tournament style championship rather than a series this year to accommodate the extra regular season that moved the entire schedule back several weeks.

The first two rounds of the tournament will be held at home arenas depending on who wins a conference title.

A third round will be held at the University of Guelph on May 12.

The final Schmalz Cup Championship game will be held at the University of Guelph on May 15.
