Thanks to the generosity of the Baxter International Foundation, Matthews House Hospice has received funding in the amount of $80,000 US to launch the “Sanctuary at Home” program. This allows for trained nurses and PSWs with palliative care education and experience to be a part of the palliative care community partners already working with this population.
“We are taking the hospice care we provide in our residence and providing compassionate care to patients and families at home, at the most challenging time in their lives. This new program is a critical part of MHH’s plan to ensure access to high quality hospice palliative care at home in South Simcoe. We thank Baxter for making our vision possible,” said Kim Woodland, CEO of Matthews House Hospice.
This program succeeds by developing a sustainable program to address the community based palliative and end of life care needs of clients and their families, including:
• Nursing care provided at home for pain and symptom management.
• Medical consultation provided at home.
• Nursing care for respite provided at home.
• Trained volunteer for respite provided at home.
• Interdisciplinary care plan with community team implemented for all clients and families referred.
Services provided by Matthews House are community driven, supported by local donors, municipalities and volunteers, and a portion provided by the provincial government. Matthews House Hospice will continue to rely primarily on donations from individuals, businesses and organizations in South Simcoe and the proceeds of our fundraising events like the gala, to provide community hospice and visiting hospice programs.
“Baxter has been part of the Alliston community for 60 years and Baxter employees and their families have long been grateful for the compassion and respite Matthews House offers to those in need,” said Stephen Thompson, general manager Baxter Canada. “Through the Baxter International Foundation we are proud to support the Hospice’s Sanctuary at Home program, giving patients and families the opportunity to choose hospice care at home.”
Individuals and families from South Simcoe and surrounding area can receive visiting hospice, wellness programs, care giver support or individual counselling.
Individuals and families can choose to come to Matthews House Residence surrounded by family and friends for their end of life journey or now receive care in their homes.
With the Walking the Journey Capital Campaign, the total cost for the new Centre of Excellence build is $6 million. The capital campaign is in full swing with just over $2 million to go.
At just under 30,000 square feet, the building will house the community hospice palliative care team, day programs, counselling and include 10 residential hospice beds, starting next spring.
As a Centre of Excellence, the building includes libraries, family and staff resource rooms, and training/educational facilities for the community.
