With the addition of two large subdivisions on the east side of Tottenham, it is now common to see a line of cars extending well past the boulevard and as far east as the new No Frills plaza when a CP train is passing through the Mill Street crossing.
The crossing, which has no gates, has long been a concern for local residents, although no collisions have been reported there.
The crossing is located next to Keogh Park and the Tottenham Fire Station.
A project is now underway to install gates at the crossing to increase safety on Mill St.
The crossing has not been identified as high-risk or potentially dangerous. Most local residents obey the signals and come to a stop when the red lights start flashing.
However, pressure to make the crossing safer increased after an Oct. 2021 collision at the 5th Line crossing, just north of town, resulting in two deaths and three others suffering serious injuries.
The new gates on Mill Street are expected to be installed in the next few weeks.
The cost of installation is being shared by the Town, CP Rail, and a federal grant.
Around a quarter of the cost will be financed by the town.
There are also plans for other work to be done on sidewalks approaching the crossing.
