The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has issued a warning about some refrigerated beverages that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The warning comes from the federal government.
All the beverages are from the brands Great Value and Silk, and include products such as almond beverage, coconut, oat original, oat vanilla, and almond & cashew unsweetened. All affected products are plant-based refrigerated beverages.
Affected products are being recalled from the marketplace.
This recall was triggered by findings during an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. There have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting a food safety investigation which may lead to the recall of other products and is verifying that these recalled products are being removed from store shelves.
If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider. Check to see if you have recalled products, and do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products.
Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.
Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health in Ontario issued a statement saying, “On July 8, 2024, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced a recall that affects certain Silk® and Great Value brand plant-based refrigerated beverages as they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Consumers are asked to visit the CFIA’s website for a complete listing of all recalled products and to visit the website regularly as there may be recalls of additional products as the food safety investigation continues.”
