The Alliston Hornets finished the regular season schedule on Friday, Feb. 23, with a 3-2 OT win on home ice over the Schomberg Cougars.
That leaves the Hornets as the top team in the North Carruthers Division this season with 72 points. Overall, the Alliston squad finished third in the province.
That’s impressive considering there is a total of 61 teams in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.
The PJHL is the world’s largest Junior hockey league.
Friday’s final game was a low-scoring event.
Alliston’s Clayson Goymour got the opening goal at 14:30 into the first period.
It was a 2-0 game when Ben Smith scored at 1:17 into the second frame.
The Cougars were on the scoreboard midway in the frame.
Schomberg tied it up at 1:20 into the third period to make it 2-2.
Neither team could hit the back of the net for the rest of the third and the teams returned for an overtime period.
It didn’t take long. Duncan Grube scored at 2:25 into the period to give the Hornets their 36th win of the season.
The Hornet’s final regular season record is 36-6.
The entire league will now go into playoff mode as final games in other divisions wrapped up on Feb. 24.
In the North Carruthers Division, the Midland Flyers have failed to get a playoff berth and are done for the season. They managed to win only three games all year.
In the quarter-finals, Alliston will be up against the Innisfil Spartans. This series should just be a formality. The Spartans have only won seven games all season.
The second-place Stayner Siskins will meet the Caledon Golden Hawks for their quarter-final series.
In third place, the Orillia Terriers will be up against the sixth-place Huntsville Otters.
The fourth-place Schomberg Cougars will play the fifth-place Penetang Kings.
