The Alliston Hornets delivered a big win over the Huntsville Otters on Friday night (Jan. 19) at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre and have moved two points ahead of the Stayner Siskins in the standings.
Last week, the Alliston and Stayner teams were tied for the number one spot.
Friday’s game started a little slow but with rough play. The Hornets led 2-1 at the end of the first period.
Both the Alliston Hornets’ goals came from forward Jacob Jackson.
The Hornets were up 4-2 in the second period on goals from Clayson Goymour and Tristian Pitt.
During the final period, the Hornets completely shut down the Otters, scoring four unanswered goals to leave the ice with an 8-2 win.
Hornets’ goals came from Tyler Kelly, two back-to-back goals from Nathan Windle, and Jacob Jackson getting his third of the night for the hat trick.
There are now nine games left for the Hornets on the regular season schedule.
Hornets head coach Jacob Bauchman said they have a lot of confidence going into the final few games, and he plans to stick with the same style of game the squad has been playing all season because it is getting results.
“The way we’re going right now, we’ve got our guys playing almost exactly the way we want them to,” Jacob said after Friday’s game. “We made quite a few changes just before the trade deadline, so we’re working on getting them all gelling as a team. As for a change in the way we’re playing, we’re staying with the same structure that we’ve been going with all year. We’ve got a little bigger, a little more physical and getting ready for playoff hockey.”
The Hornets organization signed up a few new players before the trade deadline and traded some other players to other teams.
“Usually when you mix it up too much during the season, it can cause a ruffle in the change room,” Jacob explained. “With all the guys we brought in, they all know each other and their all friends, and they’ve all played with each other in the past. I think it’s actually made our dressing room stronger. A lot of our success on the ice starts with how close everybody is in the dressing room.”
The Hornets had a home game against the Schomberg Cougars on Wednesday, Jan. 24, with results unavailable before press time.
They will be back on home ice on Friday, Feb. 2, to host the Innisfil Spartans.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
