It was a split weekend for the Alliston Hornets, as the team won at home but lost on the road.
The squad hosted the Huntsville Otters at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre for their regular home game on Friday, Nov. 28.
Huntsville scored the only first-period goal to take an early lead in the game.
After the break, the Hornets returned for the second period and delivered a solid performance, scoring three unanswered goals.
Hornets’ goals came from Will Millington and Tristen Pitt for two, to give the Alliston squad a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.
The game ended with a 5-1 Alliston win when David Harvey and Noah Prokopec both scored in the third period.
“I think we finished strong, but we need to start on top,” said Hornets forward Mark Coish after the game. “We’re not starting games the way we want to, but we’re finishing by getting pucks in the net. We’ve got a couple of new guys so everyone’s learning the new chemistry. When we’re down, we try to to get a hard forecheck on, and try to force turn-overs and hopefully get some goals out of that.”
The following night, the Hornets travelled to Penetang to take on the Kings and left disappointed.
The last time the two teams met, the fourth-place Kings delivered a major upset, winning 3-0 over the first-place Alliston team.
Coish said the Hornets were prepared to go back there and get the win.
“We’re going to be ready for tomorrow. We’ve been thinking about that game that we’ve lost,” he said of the team’s resolve to return to Penetang and get the win.
This time, the Hornets were having the same problem – they just couldn’t score. In fact, neither team could hit the back of the net in the first two periods, and they returned for the final period with no numbers on the scoreboard.
Penetang scored at 42 seconds into the period, then scored again with just under two minutes remaining.
The Hornets dodged the shutout when Ben Smith scored with 59 seconds left on the clock.
The Alliston team had to settle for a 2-1 loss.
The Hornets will return to home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, Dec. 5, when they will host the Stayner Siskins.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
