Hornets win both weekend games – big upset over Stayner

The Alliston Hornets had a huge boost to their record over the weekend winning both of their games including a huge win over the first place Stayner Siskins.

The Hornets hosted the Caledon Golden Hawks at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, December 3, and left the ice with an 8-0 win.

Alliston dominated the ice from the get-go keeping the Hawks out of their zone and forcing all the play to the outside.

It was a 2-0 game at the end of the first with Alliston goals coming from Aiden Landers and Andrew Maltby.

Maltby got his second of the night early in the second period. That was followed by another Alliston goal from Jakob Power.

The squad kept up the pressure in the third period hitting the back of the Caledon net four times to end the game.

Third period Alliston goals came from Braden Henderson, Ben Beausaert, and two from Cole Turcotte.

“We came out pretty good and got some shots on net,” summed up Hornets’ goalie Curtis McMillan, who got the shut-out for the night. “The boys weren’t even letting them in the zone, and when they did let them in the zone they were keeping their guys out of the way so I could see the puck.”

Curtis said the team had full confidence getting ready for the Stayner game two days later.

“We just got to come to the game ready. The boys got to keep working how they are – as long as they get pucks to the net and bang in the rebounds, we’ll be okay. We’re stepping up our game, that’s for sure.”

Curtis credited his team for making the shut-out happen.

“It felt good – it nice because the boys were moving them out of the way so I could see the puck – that makes my job a lot easier.”

The return to the ice on Sunday to face the first place Stayner Siskins proved to be a high-powered game with a lot of excitement for the fans.

The Siskins were leading 2-1 at the end of the first. 

The Hornets scored one in the second frame to make it a 3-2 game with one period left to go.

It was a tie game when Nathan Smilsky scored at just 51 seconds into the period.

Jack Micone got the go-head goal just two and a-half minutes later to put the Hornets up by one.

The game was tied again when Stayner scored, then took the lead with a second goal less than a minute later.

Duncan Grube tied it up with a goal at the midway mark in the period. That was followed by another Stayner goal with just over seven minutes left on the clock to give the Siskins a one goal advantage with just over eight minutes on the clock.

Jakob Power scored for the Hornets to tie the game at six.

The game was over when Duncan Grube scored the tie breaker with just six seconds left on the clock to give the Hornets the 7-6 win.

The two wins keeps the Hornets in fourth place in the division but they are now just two points behind the second place Orillia Terriers and third place Schomberg Cougars and only three points behind the first place Stayner Siskins.

There won’t be a home game this weekend. 

The Hornets are in Huntsville on Friday, December 10, to take on the Otters.

They will return to home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, December 17, when they will host the Midland Flyers.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
