Liberal Party of Canada candidate Mike Hanrahan has started his campaign to become the next MP for the riding of New Tecumseth–Gwillimbury.
A Tottenham resident, Hanrahan and the Liberal Party held a launch event at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library on Saturday, April 5.
Hanrahan was appointed as the Liberal candidate only eight days before the launch of his campaign.
The snap election, set for April 28, has not given candidates or political parties a lot of time to prepare, so things are moving ahead quickly.
Hanrahan has lived in New Tecumseth for close to 15 years. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College with his education focused on the intersection of government, economics, and environmental studies with a special interest in public policy and economics, climate change mitigation, and sustainable agriculture.
This is his first time running for public office.
The room was packed with supporters as Hanrahan addressed them during his campaign launch at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library on April 5.
“The amount of support from across our riding and beyond has been humbling and overwhelming,” Hanrahan told his supporters. I’m appreciative of the trust that our community has put in me as your Liberal candidate for this election. I like to think I wear three different hats. I’m an environmental scientist who studies sustainable food systems and climate change mitigation. I’m an entrepreneur who founded a sustainable start-up company with the goal of creating alternate sources of protein as a global health solution. Most importantly, I’m a proud Canadian, who despite spending about four years in the United States to complete my studies, never lost sight of the country that raised me.”
Hanrahan stated that he was in the U.S. during two presidential elections that were plagued by ‘right-wing ideology and corrupt misinformation.’
“We need to return integrity, respect, and compassion to our federal government, and I hope to be that person for New Tecumseth-Gwillimbury,” Hanrahan said.
He made special note of the Honda plant in Alliston and local farmers in the Holland March, as well as a goal to reduce the cost of living nationwide.
