An Alliston resident has started a Go-Fund Me page in hopes of raising enough money to help pay for surgery for a cat she is fostering.
Tara Nimmo is hoping to raise $3,200 to pay for surgery for Mia – a rescue cat who was surrendered to the Alliston and District Humane Society.
Mia was supposed to have surgery on July 20, but blood tests revealed her immune system was compromised and the surgery had to be postponed.
The Humane society is currently overwhelmed with new arrivals and still receiving daily calls to take in more animals. This year they have already taken in over 100 kittens.
“Her condition is rare,” Tara explained. “She has already been in for minor surgery, and is in again as she has abscesses on her neck due to so much accumulated infection.”
Mia needs surgery on both ears.
The surgery was expected to cost $3,200, however it has been recommended that due to several factors, including her age, a recent infection, and the fact that she has been under anesthesia so many times, that surgery should be performed on one ear at a time.
This has almost doubled the cost of surgery.
Mia is currently on antibiotics to reduce the infection.
An older couple surrendered Mia to the Humane Society in January after she developed ear infections and they decided they couldn’t care for her any more. There are several procedures that will have to be carried out to get Mia healthy again.
“In total, with everything, it’s probably going to cost around $10,000,” Tara explained. “Because you don’t know how long she is going to live, it’s now about providing a quality of life. When they clear out the infections, she comes home and plays with balls, plays with toys, and runs around.”
The Alliston & District Humane Society has a no-kill policy.
“As long as she has a quality of life, we’ll keep going until otherwise told,” Tara explained.
Once Mia has her surgery and gets better, she will be place up for adoption.
