Minor hockey in “pause” mode

It is another interrupted hockey season and players in minor hockey associations across the province will have to sit it out for at least a few weeks.

The provincial government’s announcement that all indoor arenas and recreational facilities must close as of January 5 means there will be no hockey, at all, until at least January 26.

This doesn’t mean that hockey teams won’t be able to finish their season. They are waiting to find out how long this temporary interruption will last.

The word being used across the hockey world is that leagues are in a “pause” mode, meaning they are hopeful they will get back on the ice and complete the schedule.

The TNT Tornados Minor Hockey Association made an announcement regarding the season and executives sound optimistic that things can resume on the ice in a timely manner.

“Unfortunately, with yesterday’s provincial announcement that the province is returning to ‘Stage 2’ as of January, 5, 2022, we have to ‘pause’ our hockey season,” the organization said in a statement to its members.

It went on to say: “That means no games or practices for any team, rep house league and local league.”

Although teams are not on the ice, executive said they are planning on resuming the season when it becomes okay to do so.

“At this point, this is a season ‘pause’, not a cancellation. We hope to extend our season to make up for the lost time.”

Most hockey leagues are currently around the half-way mark in the season schedule.

To complete the season, they will have to play a few weeks longer this year to complete the regular season schedule and go into playoffs.
