New Community Garden opens in Beeton

On Saturday, May 28, the grand opening of the Beeton Community Garden took place next to the D.A. Jones Branch of the New Tecumseth Public Library (NTPL) at 42 Main Street West in Beeton.

The Garden, complete with raised planter boxes built Iron Oak Canada (34B Main Street West, Beeton), was revealed during the annual ‘Seedy Saturday’ event as organized by the Beeton Horticultural Society (BHS), the NTPL and the Beeton–Tottenham Business Improvement Association (BTBIA). The event also included a plant sale, book sale and seed exchange.

The Community Garden has been planted with its initial foliage, and library employees and Horticultural Society members will maintain the garden, along with help from community members.

Organizers told The Times that operational costs for the new Garden are minimal – with plants and seeds donated through the local seed exchange program – and planning took just over six months to complete.

“The garden will bring horticultural awareness to the community, and extra vegetables will be donated to our local foodbank,” said Liza Williams, Beeton Horticulture Society president.

Although the garden is not completely finished, organizers are looking forward to hanging the new sign, designed by local graphic designed Barbara Huson. They are also expecting another delivery of soil from Brayford Sod Farms.

Once ready the garden will produce fresh, in-season veggies such as tomatoes, lettuce beans, and carrots – and the community is welcome to help themselves.
