A motion from New Tecumseth Ward 4 Councillor Alan Masters was brought forward during the council meeting on Monday, Dec. 15, to suggest the town capitalize on the huge financial windfall that will arrive when six FIFA World Cup matches are played at Toronto Stadium in 2026.

This will be the first time Canada plays its men’s World Cup match on home soil.

The matches are scheduled to be played in Toronto from June 12 to July 2, 2026.

Estimates say the World Cup could generate up to $940 million for the GTA, including $520 million in GDP growth, $340 million in labour income, $25 million in government revenue, and over 6,600 jobs.

The motion states that the Town of New Tecumseth can capitalize on this tourism opportunity by leveraging BIA networks, local attractions, businesses, and resort locations.

The motion requests that town staff explore opportunities to collaborate with local businesses, BIA’s, and tourism boards to leverage the economic potential and attract tourism to the town.

During the council meeting, it was noted that the town took advantage of the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto and benefited from the event.

Councillor Masters noted that the Nottawasaga Resort has created a professional-level soccer pitch and is reaching out to World Cup teams, inviting them to practice, relax, and take advantage of the resort’s training facilities.

The motion was received by council.
