The voting dynamics for New Tecumseth residents will change when voters go to the polls for the federal election on April 28.
The riding of Simcoe-Grey has had its boundaries changed and will now include Mulmur Township and Grey Highlands. Some residents of Adjala-Tosorontio will find themselves voting in the Dufferin–Caledon Riding.
The Town of New Tecumseth will now join Bradford West Gwillimbury in the new riding of New Tecumseth-Bradford.
The Constitution of Canada requires that federal electoral districts be reviewed after each 10-year census to reflect changes and movements in the population.
The current federal redistribution process began in October 2021. It is led by independent commissions working separately in each province to establish electoral boundaries.
Federal and provincial electoral boundaries are not required to be the same. However, in Ontario, most federal and provincial electoral boundaries are the same, while other provinces have completely different provincial and federal electoral boundaries.
Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer is tasked with applying the representation formula found in the Constitution to determine the new allocation of seats.
According to Elections Canada, the federal election period can’t last less than 36 days and no more than 50 days.
Current prime minister Mark Carney, sworn into office on March 14, after the resignation of Justin Trudeau, asked Gov. Gen. Mary Simon to dissolve parliament and call an election.
The change means that the current MP for Simcoe-Grey, Terry Dowdall, will not be a candidate for area residents in this election.
The current federal representative for Bradford West Gwillimbury is Conservative MP Scot Davidson.
