The Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are reintroducing their Crime Reduction Unit (CRU).

Currently, there are several individuals in the area with outstanding warrants. Those warrants range from Failing to Attend Court, to serious violent crimes.

The CRU locates and arrests individuals with these outstanding warrants and ensures they are brought before the courts.

It is also responsible for completing court-issued DNA orders and conducting compliance checks.

The CRU has been operating since March 2024. Over the past five months, CRU members have made 45 arrests of individuals and have laid an additional 42 new charges on top of existing charges.

The Unit has also been very successful in seizing prohibited and restricted weapons and firearms.

When an individual is convicted of designated offences, they are ordered by the courts to provide a sample of bodily fluid to be stored in a national DNA data bank. Evidence collected at crime scenes can be compared to these known offenders. This often assists with positive outcomes in complex investigations.

The CRU ensures these samples are collected and entered into the data bank. Compliance checks are conducted when an individual is released from custody with conditions.

Officers conduct random checks on these individuals to ensure compliance with these conditions.

The CRU has charged seven individuals as a result of non-compliance with their conditions.

The CRU conducts investigations with various techniques to assist front-line officers in facilitating arrests with a priority on high-risk and repeat offenders.

CRU members assisted Timmins Police Service and South Porcupine OPP by locating and arresting a 17-year-old male from New Tecumseth. The male was wanted on various warrants for multiple firearms offences and attempted murder. He was arrested and transported to the respective police services.

If you have any outstanding warrants or DNA orders, please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 to turn yourself in.

If you know someone who is breaching their bail conditions, you can contact the police or you can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
