Overtime loss splits the weekend for Hornets

The Alliston Hornets gained two points in their road game of the weekend, but gave up an overtime loss in the second game.

On Friday, December 10, the squad travelled to Huntsville to take on the Otters.

After the first period it was a 2-0 Alliston game on goals from Cole Turcotte and Nathan Smilsky.

Turcotte got his second of the game midway through the second period. That was followed up by another Alliston marker from Jack Micone with less than a minute left in the period.

The Hornets kept up the strong defence through the third period and stopped the Otters from getting on the scoreboard.

Alliston’s Mitchell Smilsky got the game’s final goal in the third to give the Hornets 5-0 win for the night.

The second game of the weekend had the Hornets in Caledon to take on the Golden Hawks.

It was a tough night for the Hornets when they gave up a 3-1 lead they held in the second period.

Duncan Grube opened the scoring in the game notching the first goal at the 13:12 mark in the first period.

Caledon tied it up early in the second period.

Two goals from Mitchell Smilsky and Rhys Brown gave the Alliston squad a 3-1 lead early in the second period.

The Golden Hawks responded and scored at the midway mark to make it a 3-2 game with one period remaining.

It was a tie game when the Caledon team scored the only goal in the third period to force an overtime period to see who would come out on top.

Caledon scored at 5:25 into OT for the 4-3 win. 

After the weekend the Hornets have a 13-7-1 record including the overtime loss and have moved up to third place in the standings. They displaced the Orillia Terriers who dropped into the number four spot.

The Stayner Siskins are in first place with 32 points, followed by the Schomberg Cougars in second with 29 points.

The Hornets will be back on home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex on Friday, December 17, when they will host the Midland Flyers.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
