Parents left wondering how to collect kid’s belongings from closed schools

Premier Doug Ford announced last week that schools won’t reopen in June, leaving many parents wondering how they can safely get their child’s belongings out of the classroom.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is currently working with the Simcoe County District School Board and Simcoe Muskoka District Catholic School Board to determine how to best approach this task.
SMDHU Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner said this must be done with caution to keep people from inadvertently being crowded and breaking physical distancing measures as they collect items from school.
“It’s going to have to come down to a booking process, staggering people coming through over time so they don’t have too many people coming in at once,” he explained.
There will be clear instructions to ensure everyone is aware of the physical distancing measures and only a limited number of people will be allowed on the premises.
“One person per family would be best to go in and do that job and the schools would have to maintain excellent disinfection throughout,” Dr. Gardner noted.
He said he’s confident the retrieval of belongings from school can be done safely, without putting any parents, staff, or students at risk.
