Procyon Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Centre, based out of Beeton, hosted its second annual fundraising gala at Caesar’s Centre in Bolton on Nov. 23.

Despite the current economy compared to last year, people still supported the event and opened their hearts and wallets.

The gale raised $35,000 to help Procyon continue their valuable work. The funds will be allocated toward much-needed improvements to the centre and toward the continued care of the injured and orphaned wildlife that arrive at the centre 365 days a year.

The centre is located at 6441 7th Line, Beeton.

The fundraising gala featured a dinner, silent and live auctions, and entertainment from Mars Giammarco’s band, Echo.

Debra Spilar spoke to the crowd and discussed the centre’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and safely release orphaned and injured wildlife and detailed the improvements that have been made to the centre since its inception in 2009.

The evening’s keynote speaker was Barry McKay from Animal Alliance. Mr. McKay spoke about his experiences as a wildlife rehabber and advocate for wildlife and emphasized the importance of supporting Ontario wildlife rehabilitation centres such as Procyon since the centre does not receive government funding.

The live auction was especially exciting this year with live bidding.

Students from Banting Memorial High School volunteered as greeters, and not only helped with the evening’s activities but earned valuable community hours by helping out.
