Seedy Saturday comes to Beeton Library

It is not yet time to start planting a garden, but you can be prepared for when the warmer weather arrives.

Seedy Saturday, hosted by the Beeton Horticultural Society, the D.A. Jones Branch of the New Tecumseth Public Library and the Beeton Tottenham Business Improvement Association welcomed visitors to the Beeton Library on Saturday, March 29, where they could pick up some free seeds for the garden.

The event featured a variety of vegetable and flower seeds.

The program is unique as it offers free seeds but also asks people to bring back some of the seeds from the vegetables they grow in their garden, which can then be distributed to others. This way, there is always a supply of seeds on hand.

“This event spreads awareness of gardening, growing, seed saving, and education,” explained Liza Williams, president of the Beeton Horticultural Society. “The library has a seed library. The concept is that you take the seeds and grow plants, and return seeds from your garden. We purchased some of the seeds and there are a lot of donated seeds. From one tomato you will get a lot of seeds, so that’s enough to do your garden and donate some back.”

There were all sorts of seeds available, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, peppers, and lettuce.

Along with the seeds, several local gardening-related businesses brought their products to the event. There was also a lot of information from the Horticultural Society about gardening and how to plant a home garden.

While Seedy Saturday is an annual event, the library has a seed catalogue that they keep on hand, and seeds are available all year.

It was a popular event at the library, with a steady stream of visitors throughout the day.
