The provincial government is issuing a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to begin the process of selecting the team that will build an expanded and revitalized Stevenson Memorial Hospital.

The local hospital is a pillar in any community, and that’s certainly the case with Stevenson Memorial,” said Simcoe-Grey MPP Brian Saunderson. “Since 1928, families throughout Alliston and New Tecumseth have relied on the hospital. Providing world-class healthcare requires planning, processes and procedures. It’s encouraging to know we’re not at this exciting stage of expansion.”

Mr. Saunderson made the announcement during a conference at the hospital on Friday, Aug. 30.

Issuing an RFQ is the first step in the process of selecting a qualified team to deliver this project that will ensure people in New Tecumseth and surrounding areas can continue to connect to the high-quality care they need in a growing community for years to come.

This project includes a new, two-story addition that will more than triple the size of the hospital and increase in-patient bed capacity by 20 per cent, allowing people and families to access the care they need, where and when they need it.

The transformation project will also include an expanded emergency department that is triple in size with a separate entrance and enclosed ambulance bays, a new pharmacy, and an updated and larger laboratory to increase capacity for testing and diagnostics. This allows the hospital to meet the needs of its increasing number of patients.

The project also includes new surgical suites that will more than double the surgical department in size, decreasing wait times for surgeries and procedures. An enhanced birthing unit with new labour and delivery rooms, a family waiting area, and a new elevated helipad to help transport patients requiring urgent, life-saving care faster, are included in the project as well.

“Our government continues to make record investments to build a health care system that will connect people to the care they need, when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “Today’s milestone brings us one step closer to getting shovels in the ground for Stevenson Memorial Hospital’s redevelopment and is another way our government is expanding capacity, decreasing wait times, and ensuring that families in this growing community can access the right care, in the right place, for decades to come.”
