In February 2024, the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) of Trustees approved a motion to establish a Safe Schools Committee.
The committee will act in an advisory capacity to recommend strategies, identify available resources, identify funding opportunities, and recommend programs and services to enhance school safety.
According to the SCDSB, the board prioritizes the safety of students and staff and is committed to creating inclusive school and work environments where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
The board says it believes in working with the community on strategies that keep schools safe, address challenging behaviours, and reduce incidents of violence affecting SCDSB schools.
The board is seeking up to three parents or guardians and up to four individuals representing community organizations and associations to serve as committee members on the new Safe Schools Committee.
Parents or guardian applicants must have a child who is currently attending an SCDSB school and must reside within Simcoe County.
Applicants from community organizations and associations should reflect and embody the SCDSB Strategic Priorities. Applicants will represent groups that have historically experienced barriers to equal access, opportunities and resources. They also must represent one or more of the following: social service agencies, organizations working with students and youth, and agencies supporting Indigenous youth.
The Safe Schools Committee will meet four times during the 2024-25 school year.
Meetings will be held in person at the SCDSB Education Centre, located at 1170 Highway 26, Midhurst.
The first meeting will occur in early November. Committee members are asked to serve an 18-month term.
Applications will be accepted until Oct. 7.
