Stevenson will resume capacity for urgent and elective surgery

Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston has ramped up its capacity for both urgent and elective surgery after getting approval from the province for a phased approach to doing the surgeries.

As of February 22, the hospital has ramped up to 90 per cent capacity.

“We are thankful that the Province has allowed us to provide elective surgeries again, as so many community members are waiting for their turn,” said Jody Levac, President and CEO of Stevenson Memorial Hospital. “It’s been a long two years and although we need to always be mindful of capacity to provide critical health care needs and emergency surgeries, we know that we need to provide as much service as we can to those who need it.”

SMH estimates that 1,000 procedures have been postponed and placed on a wait list.

Pre-COVID, the hospital was performing almost 300 surgeries per month.

“Thank you to all who have been waiting patiently as we supported the hospital during Wave 5 of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Syndie Singer, Chief of Surgery. “Our staff are excited to get back to supporting additional surgeries and providing the care that they know is needed in the community.”

Patients awaiting surgery will be contacted by their physician’s office to be advised of their appointment date.
