When Kara Fleming realized her son was allergic to the ingredients in certain kinds of soaps, she decided to take matters into her own hands to find a solution.
Kara created Summit Soap, which produces soap and body wash products that are all-natural.
“I make homemade soap and body care products,” Kara explained. “There are less preservatives and it’s better for your skin. They are all-natural products.”
Kara began looking for a solution when her son had an allergic reaction to normal soap.
“My son has a skin allergy and we tried an artisan bar of soap from another fair,” Kara explained. “He wondered why he could shower with that soap, but not others like Dove or other retail products. I dissected another company’s bar of soap, and started making my own soap that he was not allergic to.”
She names all the products herself. They are whimsically descriptive names like Fresh Watermelon, Salt Water Joy, and Rose Water Lemonade.
She currently has 20 different fragrances available in her products.
Kara stresses the fact that her soap does not contain chemicals and does not have any detergent – which is one of the ingredients of commercially produced soaps.
“Detergent is for your clothes, not your body,” Kara said. “Detergent has a bunch of things in it that your skin doesn’t need. Your T-shirts may like it, but your skin doesn’t need it.”
Kara uses Vitamin E oil in her products, which is healthy for the skin. She starts with natural oils like cocoa butter and coconut oil.
“The body wash is slightly different,” Kara explained. “It’s more of a liquid form.
Kara said that all of the ingredients she uses could be purchased in a grocery store.
“All the ingredients in my soap, you could either eat or buy in a grocery store,” she said, of how healthy her products are.
Kara sells her all-natural products at vendor’s markets as well as online.
