Two people are facing criminal charges after a report of a break-in at the Alliston & and District Humane Society.
The Humane Society reported on its Facebook page, “Sadly, the Alliston & District was subject to another break-in during the early morning hours this Monday, Feb. 13. Fortunately, this did not affect any of the animals in our care. They are all safe and sound and we are so relieved that this is the case.”
The post went on to say that surveillance cameras on site captured photos of at least one of the perpetrators. GRD Tech Services installed the shelter’s surveillance cameras after a previous break-in.
The Humane Society provided a description of the person involved, the car and asked residents to report if they recognized the vehicle or person in the surveillance photo. They provide the OPP with the footage captured on-site.
The captured images helped OPP investigators. The camera showed an older model Ford Focus arrive at the shelter. A man wearing a black hoodie, balaclava, red gloves, gray pants, and beige shoes exited the vehicle.
A quantity of cash and other items were allegedly stolen from the premises.
The vehicle used in the break-in had been reported stolen from a Metcalf Crescent home in Tottenham on the same day as the break-in.
On Feb. 15, a sharp-eyed police officer spotted the vehicle in Alliston and made a traffic stop.
Police seized evidence relating to the break-and-enter investigation, and two people were arrested.
A 35-year-old man was charged with theft, breaking and entering, wearing a disguise with intent, possessing property obtained by crime, and failing to comply with a release order.
A 31 year-old woman was changed with possession of property obtained by crime.
Both suspects were held for bail hearings.
The vehicle used in the crime will be returned to the owner after police finish examining it for evidence.
