These aren’t your typical bars of soap.
Amanda Mitchell and Josephine Burdon of The Make Shoppe create all-natural soaps and bath products that are not only whimsical and fun in design, but better for you and the environment.
The two women brought their soaps to the Tottenham Vendor and Farmer’s Market on Sunday, July 14.
Based in Beeton, Amanda and Josephine started making their soap in 2022.
“We make handmade soap and other skin care products,” Josephine explained. “We mix all the ingredients together to make the soap. It has to cure for four to six weeks before it can be sold.”
There are different ways of making soap. Josephine and Amanda use a ‘cold’ process.
“There’s a few different ways to make soap,” Amanda explained. “There’s a hot process and a cold process. We make this from scratch, so we take all our butters and oils and mix them with lye and water. There’s a chemical reaction that occurs. The chemical reaction takes a day, so after one or two days it’s safe to use, but it’s not hardened enough.”
“We also have some lip gloss and lip oil, and they’re all natural ingredients,” Josephine said. “We use essential oils.”
They use all-natural ingredients to make the soap and plant-based products for colouring.
In their packaging, they try to avoid plastics as much as possible and use paper-based packaging to be environmentally conscious.
Their products don’t look like a typical bar of soap found in a store. They are unique with many different designs.
Amanda and Josephine sell their products at various vendor markets as well as boutique-type stores in Inglewood and Beaverton, Ont.
