When it comes to football, the TNT Express Football Club takes the sport very seriously. But they also take a lot of other things seriously.
They consider commitment, responsibility both on and off the field, discipline, and learning new skills, to be a part of what the club teaches players on the gridiron.
The club considers not only players, but the player’s families as part of the group and encourages them to take part in the team’s activities.
Over the past few years the Express have lost several members and as a way to remember them they have created a new memorial under the scoreboard at Mel Mitchell Athletic Field in Beeton.
The memorial, inscribed on a huge piece of granite, was unveiled during a ceremony attended by family, friends, and players on Saturday, April 30.
“Our football club is much more than touchdowns and trophies,” said Express Club president Bob Hinde. “It’s evolved into a family. We’re a group and family and we all look after each other.”
The idea of having a memorial was floated about and club executive Beth Wink got things in motion.
After talking to people, she managed to get the entire memorial donated free of charge.
The Nottawasaga Resort donated the granite boulder from their Tree Tops development just east of Alliston.
Transporting the ten-ton boulder was a huge task. Brayford Sod Farms managed to moved the boulder to the field.
Pendergast Lawn Care and Brooklin Landscaping transported the boulder to and from Smith Monuments in Toronto.
At Smith Monuments, the boulder was cut to create a smooth face and the team logo and memorial names were added.
The memorial includes the names of former players Dodge Goulter, Gavin Marengeur, Patrick Conry, and executive member Bonnie Plaunte.
The memorial will be a permanent place to remember former players, but of course they will always be remembered, and as Bob put it, “They’re here, they’re with me every day.”
