The towns of Tottenham and Beeton were buzzing with excitement during the annual Toot n Holler town-wide garage sale last weekend.

The Tottenham Beeton & District Chamber of Commerce (TBDCC) held its annual “Toot n Holler” town-wide garage sale on Saturday.
The event, a Tottenham tradition for decades (with Beeton joining in the fun over the past four years), is an opportunity for friends and neighbours to reemerge after a long winter’s hibernation, and sift through each others previously cherished items before the spring clean.
In past years, the Town of New Tecumseth was responsible for bulky item collection, and allowed each household to have five large garbage items picked up each year at no charge. When the responsibility of waste collection was transfered to the County of Simcoe, this practice stopped, but the Toot n Holler, held annually the weekend before large garbage pick-up began, did not.
The name “Toot n Holler’”was originally created by the Tottenham CIA (Community Improvement Association), whose mandate was beautification of the community.
With the proceeds from their individual garage sales, residents were encouraged to use the money to beautify their own properties.
“The name was created by a CIA member named Laurie Burns, at one of our CIA meetings,” local Realtor and TBDCC board member, Ian Witherspoon, had told The Times during the 2016 event. “The CIA was responsible for initiating the funding for street lights, banners and hanging plants as they are currently seen throughout the village. The Chamber took over the event two years after it began, when the CIA was discontinued and their funds were given to the Chamber, so they could carry on their work.”
More than 50 garage sales were hosted in Tottenham and Beeton during the 2017 Toot n Holler, with many treasurers finding their new forever homes, and steering clear of landfills.
