The Town of New Tecumseth is reminding residents to be aware of noise by-laws which regulate and prohibit noise that could become a public nuisance.
Municipal Law Enforcement will respond to noise complaints and inquiries.
Noise is defined as clearly audible, unwanted, and persistent noise in a residential area.
A Noise Control By-law outlines activities that are regulated.
This includes loudspeakers, amplifiers, electronic devices, stereos in a building, structure, or motor vehicle, construction or maintenance equipment, bells, horns, yelling, and shouting.
It also includes a lack of muffler or tires squealing on an automobile, and improperly secured trailer equipment that causes noise.
Other noises include air conditioners, water pumps, pool pumps, filters and heat pumps that are not in working order, explosives detonation, and any ongoing, persistent unusual sound or noise that is likely to disturb other residents of the Town.
If you are a tenant and a neighbouring tenant in the same building is causing disturbing noise, contact your landlord to make a complaint.
The Residential Tenancies Act gives all tenants the right to reasonable enjoyment in their homes without noise distractions.
You can apply for a Noise Control By-law Exemption for time-limited private functions or activities or special events.
You can submit a completed form to the Clerk’s Department at the Town Administration Centre.
The Manager of Municipal Law Enforcement may grant or refuse to grant any exemption request and may impose conditions as may be determined to be appropriate.
A request for an exemption application should be made at least two weeks prior to an event to ensure a property review.
If you are experiencing unwanted and persistent noise, you can contact Municipal Law Enforcement to make a complaint at all times of the day or night.
