Is Beeton progressing or digressing? asks reader

One of the definitions of the word “Progress” is “Growth and development leading to continuous improvement.”

When I look at what seems to be happening in my little town these days, I must say that the word “digress” comes to mind.

Not too long ago the big thing was or Heritage Survey, keeping our town looking good. This came even after some bright group decided it was OK to build a condo monstrosity right on our Main Street at the corner of Patterson. If we add a Timmy’s on the other corner, which has been discussed as a possibility, think of the traffic. Condo dwellers coming out of an underground parking and Timmy’s drive-thru possibly exiting onto Patterson as well, and all this right beside a school.

Of course, let’s not forget Gibson’s trailers hitting that intersection as well. Is this what we call “Town Planning”?  What mentality could have come up with this idea?

I’m seeing other mistakes about to happen also because of the mismanagement of our town, mainly Beeton.

116 townhouses to be built at the NE corner of Beeton Main street and the Tottenham Road.

Two four-storey condo buildings and a Clubhouse to be built on Dayfoot Street.

A large development being built southwest of 10th Side Road just behind Maple Avenue.

In addition to this, the following is some real estate ads I read this week in another local newspaper:

100 Acres for sale on 10th line Beeton (actually stating “surrounded by developer owned land”) –s No prizes for guessing what will be built there.

93 acres between Beeton and Alliston for sale

Smart strategies can help rural communities achieve their goals for growth and development, while still maintaining their distinctive and rural character. We must create lively, enduring, and vibrant neighbourhoods where people will want to live.

I think our leaders, in all their wisdom, where Beeton is concerned anyway, have been putting the “cart before the horse”.

We are being inundated with hundreds of extra residents, and of course all the extra traffic that this change brings.

The whole area is going to eventually be a mess, which of course brings to mind:

I hope our Council or whoever is the driving force behind all this “so-called progress” has taken all the facts into consideration.

What are we offering these people; in fact what have you to offer all Beeton residents? It seems not too long ago that we couldn’t even decide if Beeton could have an ice pad in a new arena.

I can tell this Council right now that if we don’t intend to cater and supply better facilities to Beeton residents, including our newest residents, the poop will certainly hit the fan.

I wonder what our new people thought on Canada Day when, in New Tecumseth, Beeton was the only area with no celebrations.

In closing, I say to Council, and whoever our new representatives will be; you better get the cheque book out and start spending some money in Beeton for a change.

For sure as hell you haven’t spent much money on us up to now.
