This is an election year, and local residents will head to the polls on Monday, October 24 to vote for mayor, deputy mayor, councillors, and school trustees across the province.
For someone who is running for office for the first time, tossing your hat in the ring may be a little daunting.
The Towns of Bradford-West Gwillimbury, Innisfil, and New Tecumseth, and the Townships of Adjala-Tosorontio and Essa, will be host a candidate and third-party advertiser information session on Thursday, April 7, to provide information for those who are planning on running for office.
This will be a virtual session you can attend from home.
To be an eligible candidate in the election, you must be a resident of the municipality or an owner or tenant of land in the municipality or the spouse of such owner or tenant. You must be a Canadian citizen and at least 18 years of age.
You must not be legally prohibited from voting and not disqualified by any legislation from holding office.
A nomination form will require 25 signatures and there is a fee of $200, if you plan on running for mayor, $100 for deputy mayor, councillor, or school board trustee.
During the virtual information session, information will be supplied by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing with an overview of the Municipal Elections Act.
Topics to be discussed include the role of council and head of council, the role of municipal staff, the role of school board trustees, and nominations, key dates, and process, and the eligibility to run for various offices.
The session will also include candidate duties, general campaign rules, compliance audits and penalties, voter’s list and proxy voting, scrutineers, and endorsements and nominations.
The virtual session will take place on Thursday, April 7, at 6:00 p.m.
This is a free event but pre-registration is required.
You can register at the Town’s website at: www.newtecumseth.ca.
